About your Provider
I’m Whitney, a nurse practitioner, metabolism specialist, and lifelong foodie.
Â
My relationship with food started out easy and fun. I loved buffets and weddings for the food. I was the girl cleaning everyone’s plates, the one always in my friends’ cupboards.
Â
In college, an innocent attempt to look better for a dance audition turned into food restriction. I didn’t realize it at the time, but that decision would shape my relationship with food for the next thirteen years.
Â
I earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and nutrition. I even taught wellness and nutrition at a community college. I understood the science. It didn’t matter, though. I cycled through restriction, then swung back into overeating. All my weight fluctated.Â
Â
Clearly, this was not a knowledge problem.
Â
After years of restricting and overeating, I finally hit my breaking point in 2018. I’d just gone on the hardest diet of my life and nearly lost some of my dearest relationships in the process. My mental, emotional, and physical health suffered.
Â
That was my wake-up call. I stopped restricting and started taking a root-cause approach. I worked with an eating psychology coach and learned about nervous system regulation, emotional health, and the patterns driving my eating.
Â
That shift is what finally helped me stop overeating, stress eating, and emotional eating. I learned to eat according to what my body actually needed, which allowed me to return to my natural, lean weight. And I’ve sustained that change for years, including through two pregnancies in my late 30s.

My personal experience eventually became the foundation for my clinical work.

During my NP training, I completed a clinical rotation at the University of Utah's weight management clinic. From 2021 to 2023, I worked as a nurse practitioner at the Utah Diabetes and Endocrinology Clinic, managing a panel of roughly 900 patients, about half with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.

I talked about nutrition with almost all of them.

And I kept seeing the same thing: women who had already tried everything. Low carb. Keto. Intermittent fasting. Weight Watchers. Cutting out sugar.

Most already knew a lot about nutrition.

What they were missing wasn't more information. They needed a way to change the patterns that kept pulling them back to food.

That's what I wanted to build.

In 2023, I opened SugarSmart Health to create the practice I wish had existed for me: one that treats metabolic health & weight management as a whole-person process, not a willpower problem.

Today, that can include medications like GLP-1s when they're the right tool, alongside the deeper work that helps you build a sustainable relationship with food.

Because you shouldn't have to choose between food freedom and reaching a weight you feel good in.

You're allowed to want both.

And I can help you get there.
